The Skagit Valley Tulip Festival
Spring is about to bloom in full color, as the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival officially begins on April 1st and runs through the entire month! This beloved annual event invites you to explore a vibrant tapestry of tulip farms, each with its own charm and character. From April 1st to 30th, you’ll have the chance to wander through fields of vibrant color at Roozen Gaarde, Tulip Town, Tulip Valley Farms, Garden Rosalyn, and Skagit Acres. Each farm curates its own unique experience, with, quite literally, hand-picked designs year after year. So whether it’s your first visit or your fifth, there’s always something new to discover.
Roozen Gaarde boasts the largest acreage and the widest variety of blooms, offering what feels like an endless stroll through a rainbow. If you’re seeking that picture-perfect, fairytale walk among the tulips, this is your destination.
Tulip Town and Skagit Acres are turning up the flavor this year, adding beer gardens and tasty food options to the mix. Whether you’re in the mood for a local brew or a fresh bite, these stops are ideal for those who want to mix flowers with food and fun.

The Tulip Street Festival
If you can’t seem to fit in the time or budget to see the tulip farms, there’s no worries! Between April 18th and April 20th, Skagit County hosts the Tulip Street Festival for all to enjoy. On South 1st Street in Mount Vernon, Skagit brings the tulips to you. You can pick, purchase, or browse the endless stalls of flowers. And it’s not just flowers that are in bloom. Check out some of the projects and works of the local vendors, projects like artwork and photography, trinkets for your home and garden, jewelry, and specialty foods. Or you can just go for a stroll and be present in the scenery. Stop and smell the tulips at the Tulip Street Festival in Mount Vernon.
Bellingham Farmers Market
The Bellingham Farmers Market is perhaps the crown jewel of Bellingham. If you were ever curious as to the kind of culture in Bellingham, the Farmers Market perfectly summarizes the kind of community thriving there. At the market, you can try food from some of Bellingham’s finest local restaurants, like Korean food, or Philippine entrees, or even Russian treats! Explore some of the baked goods like cookies and cinnamon rolls, or bring home locally grown fruits and vegetables from the farmers around Whatcom. While you’re there, you can listen to the music being played by the local talent, there is always someone playing a fiddle or two.

Ski to Sea
On May 25th, is Bellingham’s annual Ski to Sea event. Ski to Sea is America’s original multisport relay race. All the way from Mt. Baker to Bellingham Bay, makes a grand total of around 90 miles! There are seven legs of Ski to Sea, starting off with cross country skiing at the peak of Mt. Baker, then to downhill skiing, running, road bike, canoe, cyclocross bike, and finally a sea kayak to end the race. There are certainly many locals that repeat the race year after year, and even some from all over the world that want to take a stab at it.
On the day of Ski to Sea, you can feel the suspense and excitement in the air. It’s open to any and all who want to participate, volunteer, or simply spectate. You can watch the event from practically anywhere on the track, though the most excitement will be at the finish line at Marine Park in Fairhaven. There, you will find some of Bellingham’s favorite local vendors serving food, beer, sweet treats, and more! Whale Watching
Spring marks the return of whale watching season in and around Puget Sound. Both Skagit and Whatcom offer unforgettable opportunities to spot these majestic creatures in their natural habitat. Starting in March, the waters surrounding the San Juan Islands become a hotspot for gray whales, humpbacks, minke whales, and the beloved Orcas whales.
Anacortes, is one of the top launch points for whale watching tours. Companies like Island Adventures Whale Watching and Deception Pass Tours offer daily excursions from the harbor, often with onboard guides to teach guests about local marine life, geography, and make great conservation.
Another popular launch spot is Bellingham Bay, as they offer a more laid back alternative for spotting whales, seabirds, and other marine wildlife. The San Juan Cruises take passengers through the San Juan Islands, offering stunning coastal views along with the chance to see porpoises, seals, sea lions, and more.
Water Sports
As the weather warms up, the lakes, bays, and rivers and lakes of Whatcom and Skagit come alive with paddlers, boaters, and adventure-seekers. Whether you’re into kayaking, paddleboarding, canoeing, or even windsurfing, there are plenty of spots to dive into the water this spring.
Lake Whatcom in Bellingham is a local favorite for paddleboarding, kayaking, and canoeing. With multiple public access points like Bloedel Donovan Park and the Sudden Valley marina, it’s an easy place to launch your gear and enjoy calm, scenic waters. If you don’t have your own gear, that’s no worries! There are plenty of spots around the water to rent a boat out for the day. As an added bonus, it’s a great place to swim when the temps climb a little higher.

2025 Bellingham Boomerang Bash
This year, Bellingham is hosting their first ever boomerang competition. Hosted by Western Washington University Alumni, Julia Greene, the Bellingham Boomerang Bash is a chance to learn more about the art and competitive nature of boomerangs. Over the years, the boomerang has evolved from a hunting tool, to a toy, to a kind of sporting event! Professional boomerang throwers from all over the US will be there, including America Ninja Warrior winner, Logan Broadbent. If you’re looking to spectate and mingle with some of the throwers, the competition will be held at Civic Athletic Complex, on April 6th.
